has great tutorials, and graphic pictures
This book met all my expectations as a novice machine embroiderer. It is small enough to hold, includes the basics of using a computer; has great tutorials, and graphic pictures, and has the basics of the process along with cheat sheets for fabrics and stabilizers. Worth both my time and money, and I will use frequently as a reference book.

Great for Beginners!
If you are new to machine embroidery, this book is a really good reference item. The section about stabilizers and how and when to use them, and how to hoop makes this book a worthwhile investment!

Embroidery Newbee
I am new to machine embroidery and have a Brother Machine. This embroidery bible has better explanations & instructions than the manual. The photos are in color too. I don't know if the book would be as helpful for those that do not have a Brother or Babylock but the concepts are good. I am glad I spent the money for the book.

A Must Have
This book is truly an embroiderer's bible. It contains information that you can't even find in your machine's manual. Instructions are explicit. I read it cover to cover before I un-crated my new embroidery machine. It was by far much more interesting than reading the machine's manual.I love it.

Check the publication date!
This book has a lot of good information - but I wish I ha checked the publication date. It is severely outdated technology, but I wanted a foundation book and this is really helpful with the concepts.

Clear, concise & step-by-step instructions
Clear, concise & step-by-step instructions for introduction to the various types of machine embroidery. When I got the book, it was so well organized that I had no difficulty understanding each part, that pointed out in advance how to avoid common pitfalls; such as those that are prevalent among the reviews of the various types of machine embroidery products (machines, thread, stabilizer). Hopefully I won’t make any of those kinds of mistakes, but if I do, I’m sure to find the solution in the pages of instructions and the trouble-shooting guide.A section on regular sewing machine decorative stitching. This book was bought because I am planning to buy a sewing/embroidery machine, but didn’t know which one to buy. I was amazed that it was very, very easy to read, that I really didn’t want to put down. In a story book, you often hear that, but rarely in a DIY, instructional manual. I’m certain the actual machine manual won’t be such a page-turner...but I’ll read it none-the-less. Not reading the manual for your own machine is the first user error cautioned against in the book. Now I have a much better idea of what things cause success and failure, as well as why some features and machines seem much more or less expensive. What I discovered was possibly the most important lessons to success: the low end models all cost about the same, and you get what you pay for.

Wonderful book!
I bought this book quite some time back (about 2 years) and finally took the time yesterday to sit down and review it. I've had my embroidery machine since just before I purchased this book and because I was so into quilting didn't really take the time to get to know it and sadly, the books that come with the machine are not that helpful. This book has helped me in so many ways and has given me totally new interest in getting to know my machine along with the knowledge needed to start experimenting. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting started with/or needing refreshers in machine embroidery.

I think this book covered everything for the new machine embroiderer ... like me. I would refer to pertinent sections as I started a new project and it was like having a teacher by my side. Recommended to me by a sewing instructor and I can see why. HIGHLY recommended!

Needs to g into more detail
I expected more information about machine embroidery than this book contains. It doesn't have enough detail on each subject so it wasn't very helpful to me as a beginner.

Great Beginner Reference
Very good for a beginner embroiderer. I especially liked, and found helpful, the section on downloading designs from the web. The section on types of stabilizers is also great for a reference.

Answer to Prayers!
This truly addressed all my needs, questions, fear, & doubt regarding machine embroidery. I have attended classes & studied my users manual, still stumbling over technique, & a boatload of unanswered questions. This “bible” is a godsend to my frustration. Immense gratitude to Liz Keegan to authoring an organized & consicise quide to utilizing my expensive Pfaff Icon!

Very good but doesn't always match with what I might be doing at the time. It is a very useful reference book and I know it will be of great use overall.

She begins with a chapter on embroidery machines and computers, which is really useful (especially if you, like me, have a 1970s machine with embroidery stitch cams and don't know much at all about the developments that have taken place since that time period!) and very thorough. The second chapter is also very helpful, because it covers all of the "tools" (including types of stabilizer fabrics and threads, for example) that are needed before beginning a project, and includes very useful info on which ones work well with what fabrics. The third and fourth chapters are full of fun stuff -- designs and stitches, ideas for projects, and lots of excellent advice. All throughout the book, there are plenty of photos and diagrams to accompany the discussions and explanations. This is going to be a very useful reference book for me.

My thanks to St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this creative and well written book! ...more

Are you interested in machine embroidery or just got a machine that is capable of it? Then go ahead and read this book before beginning! It is a few years old (at the time of this review) but it still has good basics to build a foundation upon. Would recommend to those just getting started with this type of embroidery.

Received in a Goodreads Giveaway in September 2014. Thank you!

Very beautiful book. The images are big, clear and relevant. It gives great information on the stabilizers, needles, thread and how they related to the type of fabric used and the design you are trying to make. Everything is written and explained very clearly. If you have a computerized embroidery only or computerized sewing machine with that capability, then this book is great. There are trouble shooting segments for every section as Received in a Goodreads Giveaway in September 2014. Thank you!

Now this book is only for computerized machines. Mine is a manual with an optional embroidery hoop attachment possible. The needle, stabilizer and fabric information might be useful for me but I cannot use over 50% of the book. All the aligning, design creating, placing and finishing is all software based. Something I would not be able to do. This is not mentioned in the description and in the book it's assumed manual machines cannot do embroidery at all apparently. The fancy stitch application as embroidery is put in the last chapter as an afterthought. It would be good to mention in the description that it's for computerized machines only.

Otherwise, if you are giving someone an computerized embroidery machine as a gift or are getting one yourself, get this book. I think it would be a huge help in getting started. It explains all the, what I'm guessing are, common software features. ...more

Disclosure: I was a Goodreads First Reads winner for this book, which in no part affects my review.

As a beginner, this book is incredibly helpful. Chapter 1 covers all about machines, computers, and helpful items. Chapter 2 goes over tools and materials (fabrics, stabilizers, etc.) Chapter 3 covers embroidery designs and Chapter 4 is decorative stitches. The book ends with common problems and remedies.

The thing I loved most about this book was the light colors and layout of each page, which Disclosure: I was a Goodreads First Reads winner for this book, which in no part affects my review.

A lot of the information is still relevant...GREAT for those new to machine embroidery.
Although this book is five plus years old, quite a bit of the information is relevant to this machine embroidery newbie. Because so many embroidery machines are similar, this book is definitely a win-win. There is also, a part that discusses after care of your embroidery or if you get machine error messages. I would suggest this book to anyone who questions which stabilizer(s) to use with which fabric, which thread is best, how to embroider appliqué, how to hoop fabrics to what stabilizer(s), which thread count and design works best on a tee shirt, a towel and why thread counts matter with textiles. There is so much more in this book!

Didn't work for me, but may work for you
Don't like to give it a poor review.
Written instructions don't work well for me. So it's just me. If you are able to work with books of instruction, it's fine.
